Spina Bifida Nedir?

A baby is born with an opening in their back, causing problems with the transmission of signals through the nerves. When there are connection issues between the nerves and the brain, varying degrees of paralysis can occur.

This condition is called Spina Bifida!

The spinal cord is a closed tube made up of nerves. These nerves transmit commands from the brain to the nerves in our muscles, enabling movement. They also allow us to feel. In babies born with Spina Bifida, this tube has not closed, meaning that the spine and skin covering the spinal cord have also not closed. The baby is born with an opening in their back, which causes problems in the transmission of commands through the nerves. To determine whether a baby has Spina Bifida, a blood test (AFP) and a detailed ultrasound examination should be performed between the 16th and 18th weeks of pregnancy. These tests can diagnose the condition with 80% accuracy.

The exact cause of Spina Bifida is unknown, but the B-group vitamin Folate (Folic Acid) may play a role. If the mother does not have enough folic acid, the baby’s spinal tube may fail to close properly. Other possible causes include genetic factors and the use of certain medications prescribed for epilepsy.
